    Karting Classes

    Classes are determined by your age, your weight and which type of kart you want to race. The following explanation of each class will help you decide which class is right for you.

    Comer Cadet

    Age 8 to 13 years old minimum weight 99kg including driver etc.
    Yellow number plate with black numbers

    Uses a 60cc sealed 2-stroke comer engine. It is sealed to prevent illegal modifications when entering races. The engine can be rebuilt by an approved service agent. Large Class. Pull cord start.
    Reaching speeds of up to 40mph on some long straights.  
    This class is run in most premier championships and some drivers from here travel to compete in England and mainland Europe.
    The Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton started his racing days as a comer cadet and raced at Nutts corner.

    Cost. New chassis with engine ready to race will cost around £2,500.00
    Second hand anything from £500.00 for one a few years old.
    A set of tyres could last half a season.

     

    Honda Cadet

    Age 8 to 13 years old minimum weight 100kg including driver etc.
    Yellow number plate with red numbers.

    Using a Honda 4-stroke Gx160cc engine unsealed. The long life engines are low cost but have to conform to a technical specification. This is considered the entry class for easy maintenance and racing. Small class in Ireland and larger in the UK.
    Pull cord start.
    Reaching speeds of up to 40mph on some long straights.
    With some other clubs running this class it is possible to compete in English championships.

    Second hand anything from £500.00 for one a few years old.
    A set of tyres could last half a season.

     

    Rotax Mini Max

    Age 11 to 17 years old minimum weight 142kg including driver etc.

    Using a TAG restricted 125cc sealed 2-stroke engine. It is sealed to prevent illegal modifications when entering races. The engine can be rebuilt by an approved service agent. The restrictor is added to the engine to cut down the engine power. The same engine can be used in the Junior Max class by removing the restrictor. 12v Electric start.
    Reaching speeds of up to 60mph on some straights.

    Second hand anything from £900.00 for one a few years old.
    You will need new tyres ever race or every other race to be competitive.

     

    Junior Pro Kart

    Age 11 – 16 years old, minimum weight 152kg including driver etc.
    Blue number plates with white numbers

    Using twin Honda 4-stroke Gx160cc engine’s unsealed. The long life engines are low cost but have to conform to a technical specification. Using the same engines and chassis as the senior Pro kart class only with 3 cylinder head gaskets instead of one. This is considered the economic class for easy maintenance and racing. Pull cord start.
    Reaching speeds of up to 50mph on some straights.

    Cost. New chassis with engine ready to race will cost around £3,500.00
    Second hand anything from £500.00 for one a few years old.
    One set of tyres should last you 5 races.

     

    Formula KF3

    Age 13 to 17 years old minimum weight 145kg including driver etc.
    Yellow number plate and black numbers

    Using a various make of engines example XTR 125cc 2-stroke engine with limited revs of 1400 rpm. It is unsealed but has to conform to a technical specification. This can be a more expensive class to compete in. 12v Electric start.
    Reaching speeds of up to 80mph on some straights. It is one the most powerful junior classes.

    Second hand anything from £1,500.00 for one a few years old.
    You will need new tyres ever race or every other race to be competitive.

     

    Rotax Heavy Max 177

    Age 16 years old and over, minimum weight 177kg including driver etc.
    Blue number plate white numbers

    Using a TAG 125cc sealed 2-stroke engine. It is sealed to prevent illegal modifications when entering races. The engine can be rebuilt by an approved service agent. Although the maximum revs are limited electronically they are nearly as quick as the KF2 class but much lower maintenance. For the heavier driver.
    12v Electric start.
    Reaching speeds of up to 80mph on some straights.

    TKM EXTREME

    Age 16 years old and over, minimum weight 120kg including driver etc.

    Using a BT82 115cc 2-stroke engine. It is sealed to prevent illegal modifications when entering races. The engine can be rebuilt by an approved service agent. New designs are only permitted every 3 years to keep costs low.
    It is a small class in Northern Ireland and is considered an economic class.
    Push start.
    Reaching speeds of up to 70mph on some straights.

    Pro Kart

    Age 16 years old and over, minimum weight 175kg including driver etc.
    White number plates with red numbers

    Using twin Honda 4-stroke Gx160cc engine’s unsealed. The long life engines are low cost but have to conform to a technical specification. This is considered the economic class for easy maintenance and racing. Pull cord start.

    World Formula

    Age 16 years old and over, minimum weight 164kg including driver etc.

    Using a Briggs and Stratton 200cc sealed 4-stroke engine. It is sealed to prevent illegal modifications when entering races. The engine can be rebuilt by an approved service agent.
    It is a small class in Northern Ireland and is considered an economic class.
    12v Electric start.
    Reaching speeds of up to 70mph on some straights.

    Reaching speeds of up to 70mph on some straights. It is one the most powerful junior classes.

    You will need new tyres ever race or every other race to be competitive.

     

    Rotax Max 125

    Age 16 years old and over, minimum weight 165kg including driver etc.
    Blue number plate white numbers

    Using a TAG 125cc sealed 2-stroke engine. It is sealed to prevent illegal modifications when entering races. The engine can be rebuilt by an approved service agent. Although the maximum revs are limited electronically they are nearly as quick as the KF2 class but much lower maintenance. Care needs to be taken if starting in this class as there is a weight bracket. For the heavier driver is the Rotax 177 class. 12v Electric start.
    Reaching speeds of up to 80mph on some straights.

    You will need new tyres ever race or every other race to be competitive.

     

    KF2

    Age 16 years old and over, minimum weight 160kg including driver etc.
    White number plate with black numbers

    Using a various make of engines example XTR 125cc 2-stroke engine with limited revs of 1500 rpm. It is unsealed but has to conform to a technical specification. This can be a more expensive class to compete in. 12v Electric start. The only non gear box class with front wheel break discs as well as back.
    Reaching speeds of up to 90mph on some straights. Primarily raced in the Super one Series and also an entry level into senior European level racing. It is not for the inexperienced.
